University Liggett Triumphs Over Marian in Thrilling 2024 CHSL Field Hockey Bishop Championship
In a heart-pounding finale, University Liggett edged out Marian in a dramatic shootout to capture the 2024 Catholic High School League (CHSL) Field Hockey Bishop Championship. With the final score locked at 2-2 after regulation time, Liggett clinched the victory with a 3-2 decision in the shootout.
Marian came out strong, opening the scoring early in the first quarter. At 10:33, Lily Robinson fired a shot past Liggett’s defense, putting the Mustangs on the board first. The rest of the half remained tightly contested, with both teams battling for control in a defensive standoff.
The third quarter saw University Liggett find their footing. Constantina Bournias gave the Knights their first goal at 7:44, leveling the game at 1-1. Liggett’s momentum continued, and just before the end of the third quarter, Avery Welsh broke through Marian's defense, scoring at 46 seconds to give Liggett a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Marian, however, was not done. With just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Annika Triemstra scored a clutch equalizer, bringing the game to a 2-2 tie and setting the stage for an intense overtime period.
In overtime, both teams had chances to finish the game, but neither could capitalize, leading to a shootout to decide the championship. Marian’s Clair Dauer scored in the shootout, but University Liggett responded with two decisive goals from Maisy Huebner and Ally Orlick, sealing the 3-2 victory for the Knights.
Marian outshot University Liggett, with 13 shots on goal compared to Liggett's seven, but Liggett’s resilience in goal and their ability to convert in the shootout made all the difference.
The 2024 CHSL Field Hockey Bishop Championship will be remembered as a thrilling contest of skill, heart, and perseverance, with University Liggett emerging as deserving champions.
