Boys Basketball Preseason Preview
As the 2024 boys basketball season tips off in the Catholic High School League (CHSL), anticipation is building for another exciting year. With St. Mary’s Prep claiming last season’s Bishop Trophy and the MHSAA Division 1 state championship, Riverview Gabriel Richard reaching the Division 3 Final Four, and multiple league teams dominating their respective districts, the CHSL continues to establish itself as a powerhouse in Michigan high school basketball.
Bishop Division
St. Mary’s Prep enters the season as the team to beat after an incredible run to the MHSAA Division 1 state championship and a CHSL Bishop Division title last year. The Eaglets are led by returning head coach Todd Covert, whose program has set the standard for excellence. Despite graduating key contributors, St. Mary’s depth and talent ensure they’ll be a contender again.
Brother Rice and Detroit Catholic Central are poised to challenge St. Mary’s dominance. Brother Rice, fresh off an MHSAA regional title, boasts a roster filled with athleticism and size. Detroit Catholic Central, always a tough competitor, aims to build on last season’s district championship and make a deeper playoff run. U of D Jesuit, a perennial powerhouse, will also factor heavily into the mix as they reload with young talent and seasoned leadership.
Cardinal Division
Riverview Gabriel Richard, last year’s Cardinal Division champion and MHSAA Division 3 Final Four participant, looks to continue their momentum. Led by a balanced roster of veterans and emerging stars, the Pioneers have established themselves as one of the state’s premier small-school programs. Their disciplined style of play and emphasis on team defense make them a tough matchup for any opponent.
Lumen Christi and Loyola should provide stiff competition in the Cardinal Division. Lumen Christi's physical play and commitment to rebounding have been hallmarks of their success, while Loyola’s gritty approach and determination make them a perennial threat. Both programs captured district titles last season and have their sights set on advancing further in the playoffs this year.
Ste. Anne Division
Everest Collegiate, the reigning Ste. Anne Division champion, enters the season with high expectations. After a strong playoff run that included district and regional titles, Everest is eager to build on their success. The Mountaineers’ disciplined execution and ability to control the tempo will be key factors in their quest for another deep postseason run.
Lumen Christi, another standout from last season, is expected to challenge Everest. The Titans’ run to an MHSAA regional title showcased their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. With a mix of veteran leadership and youthful energy, Lumen Christi will aim to unseat Everest atop the Ste. Anne Division.
Outlook for 2024
CHSL teams are coming off an extraordinary 2023 campaign that saw league members win 11 district titles, including two in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) by St. John’s Jesuit and Toledo Central Catholic. MHSAA regional titles were claimed by St. Mary’s Prep, Brother Rice, Lumen Christi, and Riverview Gabriel Richard, with St. Mary’s ultimately securing the Division 1 crown.
The league’s mix of talent, coaching, and competitive balance ensures that every game will matter, whether it’s a Bishop Division rivalry clash or a Ste. Anne Division showdown. As the season unfolds, expect CHSL teams to make noise in both league play and the postseason, with state title aspirations once again firmly in sight.
