Welcome to our Catholic faith
Robert Delaney The Archdiocese of Detroit welcomed more than 1,200 prospective new members to the Catholic faith last weekend at five Rite of Election ceremonies at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
My husband has taken 'in sickness and health' vow very seriously
Kristen Pohutsky Special to The Michigan Catholic Last year, my fiancé, now husband, and I went through the Rite of Initiation at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Farmington. I was born Catholic but never confirmed, and Mike, my husband, was converting from being Lutheran. This gave us a chance as a couple to grow in faith together. This has strengthened our bond on many levels, and faith plays an integral role in our marriage today.

Ending tuition grants opposedRobert Delaney Gov. Jennifer Granholm's proposal to end the Michigan Tuition Grant Program to help balance the state budget was seen as limiting access to Catholic and other private institutions of higher learning.
Losing my job in July led me to reexamine my faith, my lifestyle, my dreams and my choices. I always followed the rules, worked extra hard, and was respectful of authority. I believed this was enough to be guaranteed employment. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I had performed well on my job, but the layoff was out of my control. Facing this was a huge step toward increasing my faith.
Local Olympian
Kristin Lukowski The crowd of several dozen that gathered in Our Lady of the Woods Parish social hall was disappointed they didn't see their friend on the television broadcast of the Olympics, to be sure.
Readings for February 28: We follow Jesus in order to imitate HimFr. Richard C. Macey The narrative describes the ritual, which sealed the covenant that God made with Abraham. He will be given a new name – from Abram to Abraham, which have the same meaning. The promise is repeated several times in the longer narrative. It will use three places to describe the numerous descendants of Abraham: the sky ("count the stars" in Genesis 15:5), the land ("like the dust of the earth" in Genesis 13:16, 28:14), and the sea ("like the sands of the sea" in Genesis 32:13). These "places" are reflected in the first three days of creation in Genesis 1.

Prayer of her heart was meeting a lifetime Valentine
Mary Buckley special to The Michigan Catholic In May of 2009, I traveled to the Holy Land with Terra Sancta Pilgrimages led by my spiritual director Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM. Turning 29 soon and single for many years, I decided I would make my prayer intention about my vocation. I have always felt confident that God had marriage planned for me but I wondered whether or not I would meet a man who I would be able to accomplish my goals of faith and family with.
Cozy comfort
Kristin Lukowski Hannah Smentowski especially knows that the blankets made by a couple dozen volunteers last week were doing more than knotting some fleece together.
Readings for February 21: We are called to penance and renewalFr. Richard C. Macey The Book of Deuteronomy is the last teaching of Moses. It summarized the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness. The first few verses of this passage are recited during the Jewish seder at Passover. This passage is an ancient confession on the part of the people. It includes the two essential elements of the covenant with God: progeny and land.

Praise and worshipKristin Lukowski Anna Dudek, the oldest of the five-sister group, says Beata is more family ministry than group, and more "experiences of prayer and outreach" than performances. "Through the songs and prayers at our worship concerts we aim to draw people into worship and the experience of God's presence," she said. "This presence has the power to heal, comfort, encourage, and change lives, and it can be tapped into just by singing!"
